After-builders cleaning: preparing your property
A practical end-of-renovation checklist covering access, debris, new surfaces and windows.
Handy Services ·

The builders’ last day and the cleaning day do not always need to coincide. Good planning keeps newly cleaned surfaces from collecting fresh dust and allows the team to work systematically. Start with a clear list of completed and outstanding building tasks.
Finish dust-producing work
Sanding, drilling and cutting after the clean can cover rooms in dust again. Schedule cleaning after those operations. If one room is still being renovated, explain this in advance; phased work may be more sensible. Coordinate access times with other contractors.
Separate debris removal from cleaning
Bags, packaging, flooring remnants and large items need a separate discussion. Surface cleaning does not automatically include removal. Clear floors provide better access to corners and skirting boards. Include floor level, lift access and parking if clearance is also required.
Identify new materials and residue
Send photos of paint, adhesive and cement residue and identify the surface beneath. Keep manufacturer care instructions for new flooring and finishes. Results depend on compatibility between the method and surface; not every mark can be removed safely. Discuss glazed area and window access separately.
A quick preparation checklist
- Dust-producing work is complete.
- Bulky debris is removed or separately arranged.
- Water, power and safe access are available.
- Sensitive surfaces are identified.
- Handover timing is agreed.
